More proposed reforms for NSW – Rating System for developers, builders and certifiers

Early this week, the NSW Minister for Better Regulations, Kevin Anderson, announced proposed additional reforms for the Building Industry in NSW.

This includes the introduction of a rating system for builders, certifiers and developers that would score them on the quality of their previous projects.

The Minister said that the government will be working with private rating agencies, insurers and financiers to implement the rating system.

The NSW Government has also proposed powers for the Building Commissioner to examine operators with poor ratings and block a building’s occupation certificate if the Commissioner believes the project could be dangerous.

The reforms require the NSW parliament to pass the Design and Building Practitioners Bill 2019 (NSW) (‘the Bill’). The Bill is currently before upper house of parliament. You can read about the other impacts of this Bill in our previous update here.
